Welcome to the second installment of the exciting activities your CoSA colleagues have planned for Archives Month 2016.
Massachusetts is hosting a Personal Digital Archiving: Train the Trainer workshop in celebration of Archives Month and Electronic Records Day with funding from the NHPRC. The goal of this workshop is to provide institutions with the tools and expertise to host your own personal digital archiving workshop in your community.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed October Archives Month in South Dakota. “Archival institutions have a responsibility to collect, organize, preserve, and make available records that document the history of the state of South Dakota and the plains region for the education and appreciation of present and future generations,” Gov. Daugaard noted in the proclamation.
There are county, municipal, university and private archives as well as the State Archives, and each of these organizations contains historical records that document the rich history of our state,” said Chelle Somsen, South Dakota state archivist. “This month is the time for us to focus on the important records that protect our rights, provide enduring memories and give recognition to the people and programs that maintain these records.”
The South Dakota State Historical Society-Archives at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre is sponsoring or participating in several events that highlight historical records in October, including:
Saturday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CDT, Archives open
The State Archives will be open, as it is most first Saturdays.
Saturday, Oct. 1, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Coming to Dakota Scavenger Hunt
A free scavenger hunt is being held at the State Archives. Participants will use archival collections to answer questions related to immigration to South Dakota. Refreshments will be provided.
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., #AskAnArchivist Day
AskAnArchivist Day is a national event sponsored by the Society of American Archivists. Follow the Twitter conversation using #AskAnArchivist and send your questions to @SDArchives.
Monday, Oct. 10, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Electronic Records Day
Oct. 10 is designated as "Electronic Records Day" by the Council of State Archivists. Electronic files are much more fragile than paper records, and their long-term survival requires attention and planning. Watch the State Archives Facebook page on Electronic Records Day for tips on preserving and managing your electronic files.
Monday, Oct. 24, 7p.m., Cedar Hill Cemetery Virtual Tour
Ken Stewart with the South Dakota State Historical Society will conduct a virtual tour of the cemetery using a PowerPoint presentation while discussing some of the area’s early residents who are buried there. This is a free presentation that will be shown in the education room at the Cultural Heritage Center.
